Here are the first photos of yet another brood from a rescued Mother cat, named Wilma. She and her six babies are doing great, and being fostered by a wonderful family. In a few months we'll be needing to find forever homes for them, and for Wilma, whom we're told is an exceptionally devoted and proud Mama. Hopefully we can start scheduling visits within a few weeks for anyone interested in adopting.

Français suivra : We are trying to catch, sterilize and re-home an entire colony of feral cats right now. Time is not our friend- the two people in the building adjacent who are feeding them are leaving in June, and everyone else who lives in the immediate vicinity are anywhere from mildly annoyed at their presence, to actively hostile, threatening to poison them. Sterilizing them and re-releasing them is NOT an option. We need your help. What we need right now, is a handful of kind and generous people to foster for us. So far, 4 of these cats,including one mother nursing 2 babies, and one pregnant female, are being fostered, and we are so grateful, but we need 4 more. And ultimately, we will need to find permanent homes for these cats. All 3 of us- Danette, Zoi and Leni, we all have ferals who live with us, and although they will never come to sit on your lap, they will, after a certain length of time, engage in play, allow a small touch of the hand on the head, or sleep on your bed at night, purring contentedly. Their happiness, safety and comfort is absolutely its own reward, and so if you, or anyone you know has it in them to offer a temporary, or permanent place in their home for one of these innocents, message us. These cats will have their adoption fee waived. The next thing we need, and crucial to our success, is donations. The money we spend on these cats will not come back to us in adoption fees, and they often have issues requiring extra costs, medicine etc. Every dollar counts! If you would like to donate even a small amount, or if you would fully like to sponsor one of these cats, message us, or you can drop off donations at the Arterie, 176 Bernard ave. One last thing, a small thing, but again, so important and so appreciated; please share this. We really and truly need all the help we can get right now. These cats need our help, their circumstance is not their doing, but humanity's. We can't help every single creature in need, but that's no excuse to not try and help the ones we CAN save. Les amis, comme certains entre vous sont peut être au courrant, nous sommes en ce moment en train d'essayer d'attrapper, de stériliser et de placer tous les membres d'une colonie de chats sauvages. Nous n'avons plus grand temps, car les deux seules personnes qui les nourrissent partent en juin, et les autres gens qui habitent dans le bloc soit ne veulent rien savoir, ou veulent carrément tuer les chats. Nous ne pouvons donc pas les stériliser et puis ensuite les remettre dehors. Nous avons besoin de votre aide. La premiere chose, c'est que nous avons besoin de foyers d'accueil. En ce moment, 4 de ces chats sont placés temporairement, et nous en sommes très reconnaissant, mais il nous en faut 4 autres! Ensuite, nous allons avoir éventuellement besoin de foyers permanents pour ces minous. Je dois vous dire que nous avons tous les trois des chats de colonies qui habitent avec nous depuis des années, et peut-être que ces chats ne viendront jamais s'assoir sur nos genous, mais après un certain temps ce laisseront flatter, vont jouer, et viendront même ce coucher sur nos lits la nuit. Leur confort et leur sécurité est en soit la meilleure récompense, donc si vous êtes interressé, ou si vous connaissez quelqu'un qui serait peut-être interressé, envoyez nous un message. Nous allons placer ces chats sans frais d'adoption. La deuxième chose, c'est de l'argent. Nous avons besoin de stériliser tous ces chats, et la plupart ont aussi besoin de médicaments etc. Même si c'est un dollar, ça nous aide! La dernière chose, c'est qu'on vous demande de partager, afin que nous puissons rejoindre autant de gens que possible, afin de pouvoir sauver ces petits innocents. Nous ne pouvons pas sauver tous les animaux en besoin, mais cela nous donne pas l'excuse de ne pas tout faire afin de pouvoir aider ceux qui sont en besoin, devant nous. Merci!

Say Hello To Oscar The New Store Cat!

Oscar is a rescue cat that is living at our little Boutique Arterie in Montreal.
He was born in the ally way behind my apartment.
My neighbour Zoï has been feeding him and loving him for the past 2 years.
He is just starting to socialize as you can see from this quick little video of him. I think he's doing pretty well considering what he's gone through in his short life up until now. See, he's only 2 years old and he is F.I.V. positive. This is one of the unfortunate consequences for cats living in the alleyways.
But now he is with us, and he's a healthy spayed boy lookin' for a friendly home to live out his many days.

We love him oh so very much. Do you know someone who wants to love him?

Almost seven years ago, Montreal’s city government began widening the sidewalks and installing new benches and planters on a section of Rue Bernard west of Boulevard St.-Laurent that had been lined with musty convenience stores (“dépanneurs” in the Quebec vernacular), greasy spoons and vacant storefronts. The surrounding neighborhood of Mile-End had become a prominent spot for local music, with bands like Arcade Fire and Godspeed You! Black Emperor having come up through its clubs and practice rooms. But the area’s cachet had somehow eluded Rue Bernard — until construction on the sidewalks was completed in 2006.

“The street was dug up for two or three summers, and after that the street started to change,” recalled Daniel Sanger, a writer who’s lived in the neighborhood on and off for 25 years.

Rue Bernard’s improved pedestrian friendliness brought with it a new generation of hangouts and shops, and cost a few of the old standbys. One of the longtime tenants that survived the face-lift is D’Un Sport à L’Autre (173, rue Bernard Ouest; 514-278-1909), a sporting goods store that sells a chaotic jumble of used and new equipment. After more than 15 years in business, it feels like an overstuffed garage, and the chaos is much more playful and encouraging than your average Nike store.

Arterie (No. 176; 514-273-3933; arterieboutique.blogspot.com), a nearby boutique, sells the work of Montreal designers alongside a collection of used clothing. Highlights include endearingly odd jewelry, vegan shoes and dresses by Valerie Dumaine from 130 Canadian dollars, about the same in U.S. dollars.

The work of Montreal designers is also the focus at Montréalité (No. 51; 877-254-8676;montrealite.com) farther down the block. Most of the screen-printed apparel here contains references to the bilingual life, including one T-shirt that says simply “Ouash,” a distinctly Québécois expression for “yuck” (15 Canadian dollars).

For design of the nonwearable sort, graphic novel enthusiasts from around the world make pilgrimages to Librairie Drawn & Quarterly (No. 211; 514-279-2224;drawnandquarterly.com); the headquarters of the successful publishing house that spawned it are nearby. The shop sells a delightful variety of graphic novels, art books and fiction — like “Hot Potatoe,” a new anthology by the Canadian graphic artist Marc Bell (44.95 Canadian) — and hosts book launches and workshops.

On a recent evening, the front room of the HELM Brasseur Gourmande (No. 273; 514-276-0473; helm-mtl.ca), a gastropub that brews six varieties of its own beer in the back, was full of young people trying to converse over a loud soundtrack. HELM’s name is an acronym for the ingredients of beer: houblon (hops), eau (water), levure (yeast) and malt. The menu offers tapas-size pub food with an emphasis on local ingredients, like the wild boar shepherd’s pie (13 Canadian dollars). Although the spot’s varnished-wood design is slicker than the homespun aesthetic you’ll find elsewhere in Mile-End, the food is homey and an excellent foil for the beer.
